Review/Feature: Final Fantasy Origins

April 30, 2003 11:59 PM PST

insert credit / tim rogers / Doug Jones

This is the beginning of an interesting project here. Tim and a few of his pals have decided to play through every Final Fantasy, chronicling the process with digital video. This first piece lays the groundwork for the feature, which will be released in full over the coming months. This is Tim's Final Fantasy Origins review, focusing on FF1 this time round. After you're finished with that (or before, if you're daring), take a look at the video project and accompanying notes; FFDOG - Part 1.

News: Sega sued for SC5

April 30, 2003 5:47 PM PST

Sega / BS

More trouble for Sega - they are getting sued by Lady Miss Kier, due to their having allegedly copied her image for the character Ulala from Space Channel 5. Lady Miss Kier is the singer of the band Deee-lite, who had a moderate hit in the late 80s. According to another article, Sega offered her $150,000 for image rights, which she declined. If she wins the lawsuit, she stands to win $750,000. Interesting. According to Gamespot: "The lawsuit also states that audiences will most likely be confused, if they haven't been so already, as a result of the similarities between the two." What audience? What confusion? Suing a near-bankrupt company is an interesting choice - and yet, I wonder why Sega bothered to use her likeness in the first place? If you want some proof, check out two links - Lady Miss Kier, and Deee-lite concert image. Thanks to Mosqition's MMCafe post for the news.

April 30, 2003 5:20 PM PST

News: Psikyo shuts down

April 29, 2003 11:47 PM PST

Madman's Cafe / BS

Update: This information was later proven false. No-one is certain at this time just who to blame for that. The Psikyo brand will continue after all.

Another bastion of the 2D era bites the dust. The Madman's Cafe reports that Psikyo is closing their doors indefinitely. This was announced in a recent Arcadia Magazine - it seems as though G-taste for PS2 is indeed the last warbled hurrah for the long-struggling company. We'll miss you...

News: Bistro Cupid 2

April 29, 2003 11:31 PM PST

Ayashii Gamesubs / BS

Bistro Cupid 2 has been announced for PS2 and Xbox, and the official page has gone up as well. The sequel to the bizarre dating/cooking/sim/rpg will be released sometime in 2003, price undetermined. Not too much up at the page just yet, but you can check out the characters if you so desire.

Play-Asia: PS2 on PCE/MD/SNES

April 29, 2003 11:27 PM PST

Play-Asia.com / BS

This is certainly an interesting group of items. A third party has created a device that allows you to use your dualshock analog PS2 controller on a Megadrive/Genesis, PCE/Turbo Grafx, or SNES! The adapter supports turbo, slow-motion, 4-button emulation for PCE and 6-button for MD (why not 6-button for PCE?). It is even possible to assign d-pad motions to the analog stick...rather a strange peripheral, but very nice even so.

News: Frontwing forms new company

April 28, 2003 7:35 PM PST

Frontwing / BS

Frontwing must be making some decent money. This is the second company spin-off for the H-game makers in as many years (the first being Survive). The new company deals with boys-side H games; not for the weak of constitution or closed of mind. B-Wings is the new group's name, their first project being Take Off! for PC. The game sports some nice character design (left), and will be featured at Supercomic City on May third and fourth, then the Charafes on the 5th.

An only semi-releated note - you can now take a look at thumbs of the Frontwing (proper) posters that will be onsale at the Charafes. Right here!

April 28, 2003 7:26 PM PST

News: GP32 latest

April 28, 2003 7:17 PM PST

Various / BS

The news in brief - two new homebrew games available at Brianpostma.com - these are two ports of original java games. There's also a vectrex emu available at GP32 Emu. And if you were wondering what's up with the flurry of activity over at AHA Studio, it's got little to do with Wings of Soul, or the GP32. They're updating with PC game mods, basically. But one interesting note is that Onmoon has joined the AHA Studio ranks - you may recall him from the very early days of the GP32...he's an accomplished illustator and sprite artist who worked on several of the earlier GP32 pro homebrew projects from korea.

And of course if you want some HNG videos, visit Rugal's captures page.

News: Dark Night

April 27, 2003 11:27 PM PST

N.A.P.S. Team / BS

N.A.P.S. Team, makers of Gekido Advance, have announced a new ARPG in development for the handheld. Dark Night is the name, and to quote Craig Harris: "Naps Team is using the NES Legend of Zelda II as inspiration for Dark Night, and the developers promise an average of 30 hours of gameplay when all is said and done."

Check out the shots - some nice stuff. This is not on the naps team website or anywhere else for that matter, so I must credit *COUGHcoughigncoughCOUGH*. At least it's Craig.

News: Project Phoenix

April 26, 2003 11:53 PM PST

A very odd homebrew shooter from Infoceptor. It's a mission based vertical scroller with ripped sprites from Starcraft. Simplistic, but rather fun. Download Project Phoenix beta 1.1 here. Thanks to Amakusa from our forums for the news.

News: Arcturus from Falcom

April 26, 2003 11:47 PM PST

Falcom / BS

Very interesting news - Falcom is publishing the excellent Korean RPG Arcturus in Japan! The game was released in December 2000 in Korea by Sonnori (of Astonishia Story fame) and Gravity Corp. It seems as though Falcom plans to bring the game to Japan on June 30th. That's a big delay, but better late than never - it's a truly fantastic game. Keep your fingers crossed for a US release or at the very least a console conversion! Only one image is available at this point. Click the pic for a larger version.

News: GP32 latest

GP32 news states that Iceman GP is starting a dedicated port of Kof 2000! Check out the GP32 news site for more images. A 3D version of Connect Four! has been made by Clem. Interesting choice! GP32 News also posted info regarding the recently-released Mill. It will not work with unofficial firmware, so be wary when purchasing.

News: Xianghua ridicule

April 26, 2003 6:08 PM PST

News: Virtual View series

April 25, 2003 11:49 PM PST

Pony Canyon / BS

Now that the PS2 ecchi photography game Motion Gravure is on sale (yesterday), another series has been planned. Virtual View is a game in which you play the photographer's role once more, but this time the girls are displayed for you via 360 degree video. You can manipulate the camera all around the model(s) as they move, taking pictures from your desired angle. This was done by using multiple cameras, in a technique similar to the Matrix's bullet time - but of course the camera motion is completely controlled by you.

Three games are planned, so far. Click the title to view a box image. RCT Eyes Play features multiple girls. This one showcases Nemoto Harumi. And this of course, is the famous Megumi. Incidentally - both Harumi and Megumi have Motion Gravure games available - here, and here. Each features 32 minutes of MPEG 2, 30 fps high quality video, but no BGM. In an attempt to realistically mimic a photoshoot, the only sounds will be that of the 'production staff' and the girl herself. The games also hold photo galleries which comprise a sort of 'making of' for the game. The Virtual View games will retail for 3,800 yen each on July 17th. Check Impress Watch for more images! Thanks to Rid for the link.

News: Castlevania GBA downloads

April 25, 2003 11:30 PM PST

KCET / BS

At the official page for the new GBA CV: Aria of Sorrow, you can download a MIDI arranged 3 minute clip from the soundtrack (rather mediocre, but worth checking), a wallpaper and a gameplay movie. The movie is interesting. It seems as though they've really no intentions of upping the level of detail in the main character. An odd choice, especially with the release of the GBA player. Thanks to Time Mage's MMCafe post for the link.

News: Iridion II date

April 25, 2003 11:21 PM PST

Shin'en / BS

News: World/end released

April 25, 2003 11:04 PM PST

Abogado Powers / BS

Just as an update for you, Abopa's seminal release The World is Drawing to an W/end was re-released on PC-DVD yesterday for 6,800 yen. Updates include dynamic stereo sound, cleaner image transitions and better quality cinemas. But the main thing is just that the game was long unavailable/out of stock, and has now returned to the arena.

Feature: Bowling with Megatokyo

April 25, 2003 4:44 AM PST

insert credit / tim rogers

"On Saturday, January 4th, 2003, representatives of insert credit, the world's greatest videogame site, wielded ten-to-fifteen-pound balls against representatives of Megatokyo, the web's greatest serialized comic. In a wide building where the American flag flies over a DDR machine of some standing, where beers were served, in the chill of the Saturday night, we bowled."

News: Playmore!

April 24, 2003 10:58 PM PST

Playmore / BS

Playmore!!! They have updated with some interesting news...a roster for SvC Chaos! My assumption is that these are merely some of the characters that will be included, rather than the final list. Keep your fingers crossed, but at the very least you can see that the game won't just be the standard fare, especially with Tabasa in there. Another update is here on the download page, where two new wallpapers are available - they're Samurai Showdown themed, and timed with the PSOne Books re-release of the two SS titles. Updates were also made to the KOF 2002 DC page in English. Nothing we didn't already know, however.

Play-Asia.com: New games released

April 24, 2003 10:58 PM PST

Play-Asia.com / BS

Lots of new ic news-related PS2 goods up for sale this week! I'll highlight a few:

GreenGreen: Kane no Oto Dynamic - US $59.90 - Groovey - Galget game

G-Taste Mahjong - US $59.90 - Psikyo - Ecchi Mahjong

The game is based on the G-taste series of hentai Manga and DVDs, but is of tamed down (of course) for the PS2. Only You is a very odd ADV/RPG game from GeneX, publishers of the Princess Maker series. Check out the official site here, and a movie of the game here.

Review: Mobile Light Force 1 and 2

April 23, 2003 9:26 PM PST

insert credit / brandon sheffield

Two perfectly fine import shooters were recently brought to the US by a perfectly horrible company. Read the full review of both Mobile Light Force (Gunbird) and Mobile Light Force 2 (Shikigami). While it may be rife with humor, but don't let that distract you from the horror, the violence of...MLF.

News: Blessed Magazine

April 23, 2003 8:59 PM PST

Blessed Magazine / BS

Homophrysune - a greek word used in the time of Homer's Illiad. It means like-mindedness, and the spirit of brotherhood. This is the perfect word to describe what I feel when reading the pages of Blessed Magazine. Their work was recently brought to my attention, and I fully support what they're trying to do. They're an independent zine with thoughtful writing, a penchánt for niche titles, two serialized comics and some fantastic art. Blessed ships internationally, and I urge you to read the samples and judge for yourself.

News: Radium GP32 update

April 23, 2003 8:45 PM PST

Karma Studios / BS

Here's the latest update on Radium, the 3D third person shooter from Karma Studios! This game was long put on hiatus but I decided to give another check-in, given the opening of JoyGP. As for the answer, I'll let team member Martijn Wenting speak for me:

I can't say too much at the moment, but we are currently talking to GamePark about a GP32 release.

If this is anything but good news, I'll be shocked. (Screenshot from the PD version).

News: Falcom extras

April 23, 2003 8:36 PM PST

Falcom / BS

Some new items are available from Falcom! For one thing, there's a Falcom catalogue which contains a CD with exclusive in-development footage of 'new games' (presumably Ys 6 and Legend of Heroes 6). These are available at the following stores.

In a campaign to move their Microsoft XP compatible titles, Falcom is supplying a free corresponding wrist pillow with each of the following titles: Moonlight Destiny - Dinosaur Resurrection - VM Japan - VM Japan upgrade kit - Perfect Reprint Xanadu - Ys Perfect Collection I and II - Legend of Heroes 3, 4 and 5. If you just want the pillow, VM Japan upgrade kit is likely the best way to go.

News: Iridion II release date

April 23, 2003 8:31 PM PST

Shin'en / BS

A release date for the polygonal GBA shooter Iridion II is a hard thing to come by. The only concrete date I've seen is given by Amazon.com (May 12th). So I contacted the developers (Shin'en) personally. His response:

"As far as i know the amazon release date is true, though Majesco said once that the release will be in early May. So i think May 1st will be good average."

So it looks like your guess is as good as mine. At least the month is set!

Well the forums were up, but nobody could register in them. Not too helpful. The problem has been resolved once more, so please head on back and register!

As an aside, we've gotten quite a few emails regarding the DDRticle. I just want to reiterate that every editor's opinions are their own, and not necessarily shared by all staff. An alternate view of the subject has long been planned, and should be published wednesday if all goes well.

Shots from the new PS2 version of Castlevania have been "made available" on the internet. So as to implicate myself as little as possible, I'll just link to you this thread. Whatever you do after that is your business.

Feature: The DDRticle

April 22, 2003 4:06 AM PST

insert credit / tim rogers

This is a feature over four months in the making. I mean that truly, as the first copy crossed my proverbial 'desk' in early December of 2002. But finally it has been unveiled - Tim takes serious issue with DDR, in a feature he's titled ADHDDRD. To wit: attention-deficit hyperactivity dance dance revolution disorder. Fear not DDR fans, ever since I first saw the piece I had a rebuttal in mind. You'll hear from the brandon sheffield on this topic soon enough. This is a must read for DDR fans, and an even muster read for DDR opponents.

What's new from the Range Murata, the odd character designer of New Power Instinct, Groove on Fight, Blue Sub #6 fame? Why, clothes and accessories, of course. The outfit to the left can be seen here, worn by the...NPI main character? Correct me if I'm wrong. Wacky, expensive stuff, but damn fun to look at.

Alfa System has put up various extras for their upcoming arcade game Shikigami no Shiro II. The best stuff is in this section, where you can download a movie and two MP3s from the game. Just for your information, the two movies you see are simply different sizes of the same video. Definitely shows some promising advances over the original!

OK - thanks to Paleface's astute observations, a couple of fixes. The movies are for the Naomi Arcade version (thus the mail-in score attack). The game is to be launched this summer.

News: Illusion update

April 18, 2003 10:59 PM PST

Illusion Soft / BS

A bunch of stuff from Illusion today, though I can only really comment on one of them. There will be a DVD re-release of the older title Reversible Face. I can't direct link to the update, as there are some questional bits in there. here's the much cleaner official page. The other updates include two downloads; DBVR intro, and ViewMaria executables. These are both in the members only section, though they both seem to need a DBVR disc to run? This makes no sense, but I've not been able to get it to work. Anyone who can, please let me know.

News: Capcom cuts titles

April 18, 2003 10:55 PM PST

Capcom / BS

Capcom recently announced that they will be dropping 18 titles from their 100-or-so roster of title in order to cut costs after their posted loss for 2002 of 163 million dollars. It's most likely that these will be titles that haven't been announced yet, but even so...keep your fingers crossed for Killer 7 and Viewtiful Joe! This is Capcom's first annual loss that I can remember hearing of. Let it be the last.

News: Play-Asia post price plummets!

April 17, 2003 7:49 PM PST

Play-Asia.com / BS

Play-Asia.com has drastically cut their international shipping fees! For instance: the GC capcom action game P.N.03 ships for only 2.60 if you choose the bubble wrap option. The new PS2 release of Galaxy Angels is shipping for $3.10! If this goes over well, they say that they might go for a $3.50 boxed option as well. So if you were ever worried about purchasing there due to the shipping costs...fear no more! This means that you can now pick up one of the NGPC or budget Dreamcast games for $10-15 shipped!

News: Playmore update

April 17, 2003 7:45 PM PST

Playmore / BS

Lots of news bits from Playmore yesterday/today! As you can see to the left, King is also returning to the fray on the DC version of KOF 2002, joining Shingo as an unlockable character not available in the arcade version.

Playmore's other update was to their recruiting page. They're pushing very heavily for Pachinko staff. They seem to be quite serious about getting some financial backbone before pushing forward. I think that playmore has turned SNK around into a very smart, organized company. It's impressive to watch...

Last thing, there will be some big news on the 30th, according to Arcadia Magazine. And they should know, as they themselves will be delivering it. Stay tuned for more!

News: GP32 latest

April 17, 2003 7:23 PM PST

Curious - Mill has been recalled for the time being, yet Lik-Sang still professes to sell them. What with the reports of the game overclocking the CPU, I would caution strongly against purchasing the game prior to safe release!! Overclocking has proven to muck up the LCD display, so be careful!

Two new homebrew games have been released, Tony - Targets and GP32 Darts.

Rumor: Sega/Namco merger?

April 16, 2003 5:29 PM PST

Gamespot / BS

Gamespot reports of a Nihon Keizai Shimbun (Japan Economics journal) article which states that Sega is considering offers from their three suitors; Namco, Sammy and EA. Namco is considered to be the forerunner. Further confusing me as to just what exactly happened with Sammy previously, if not a merger?

News: NGPC 6 game bundle at EB

April 16, 2003 5:19 PM PST

Electronics Boutique / BS

Seems like even EB is getting in on the surplus NGPC cart action! They're now selling an NGPC bundle with six carts taped to the box (classy!) for $80. It's a good starter set for those who don't own it, but collectors will probably not need to concern themselves. Doesn't seem like you even get to choose the color. Oh well!

The fancy new PS2 is up for preorder. The new version of the system comes out on May 15th, with DVD and CD R/W support, progressive scan video out, and a 30% quieter fan. For this, you sacrifice the i-Link port.

Viewtiful Joe (GC) is also up for preorder! If this game does not rule, I will eat my hat. And I really don't want to do that. Check out a trailer if you've no idea what this game is about.

Last, but not least...the ASR Front-Light pack!!! Get the ASR limited pack, plus a frontlit GP32 for $249!!!

The Great Sasuke, professional wrestler, was elected to the Iwate Prefectural Assembly on Sunday. Sasuke (aka: Masanori Murakawa) was one of 12 competitors vying for 10 seats on the assembly. Sasuke blew them all away, recieving more votes than any other candidate. But all is not rosy for Sasuke, as Iwate Gov. Hiroya Masuda has voiced some concerns regarding his wearing the mask during assembly. Special thanks to puroresu fan Substance J for the news.

News: Gunparade II manga

April 13, 2003 11:56 PM PST

Alpha System / BS

New Gunparade II manga from Alpha System, written entirely in romanji (with supplemental kana on the side). The story is told from two sides, that of the boy and the girl. A good read, especially helpful for those learning japanese, as you can see the romanji in the comic, and reference it to the kana on the left.

News: Seed 9 latest

April 12, 2003 11:39 PM PST

Seed 9 / BS

Speaking of heads in pots (heh), here's the latest news from Seed 9, makers of the excellent potted head galget game and the amazing Tomak: Save the earth again. For one thing, they're developing an online version of their shooter line - Tomak Battle Online is the name. It's a multi-player shooting game (dare I call it an MMOSTG?) slated for a May release. Expect to hear a lot more about this come E3 time.
Another new game from Seed 9 is Tomak Blaster. No info on this one other than the July release. Of course if you can read the Korean info, please let me know.

Rumor: Samurai Showdown V in the works?

April 11, 2003 11:45 PM PST

Triuemenator / BS

Of course I'll err on the side of pessimism here, but it's worth reporting. A Neo-Geo.com forum poster recently mentioned a rumor that Samurai Showdown V is in the early stages of development, and will be released next year. Take this with a heap of caution grains, but hope the good hope. here's the forum post in question.

News: Playmore press release

April 11, 2003 11:27 PM PST

Playmore / BS

Before I got the chance, the recent press release from Playmore was translated by Henry Moriarty of the Madman's Cafe in a forum post. Here's the gist:

There was recently a book called "The dark side of the Aruze Kingdom" published in Japan, which covered the nasty side of the company that bought SNK a while back. To keep the long story short, the acquirement- which was supposed to help out SNK's financial situation actually made SNK's state even worse than before. The book covers what Aruze actually did to the company behind the scenes.

That latest update in the site is a public statement to acknowledge that all of the facts written in there are true, and that Playmore provided information to the authors i writing the book. There might be a second volume coming out since it seems that the authors are still asking for more references.

News: Xbox price drop in Europe

April 11, 2003 11:21 PM PST

MSNBC / JH

Many critics decry the media's overwhelming coverage of 'Operation Iraqi Freedom', as selfish in the face of other wars, such as that which currently grips Congo, which currently rage across the globe.

I want to applaud MSNBC for making the unpopular decision throughout the war to reserve a part of its webpage to another global war.

Here is an example of their alturistic journalism.
Editor's note: Summary; Xbox drops to 199 euros and 129 pounds in Europe.

Some great stuff for the R-Type fans! Check out a video of the opening for R-Type Final, very dramatic stuff. Then, head over to Alamone's page and get a large movie with gameplay...just to note, I had to use a dedicated divx player to get this working. You may not, but just in case...

News: Playmore latest

April 10, 2003 8:47 PM PST

Playmore / BS

New info from Playmore regarding their KOF 2002 Dreamcast post; the challenge mode will me somewhat similar to that of Guilty Gear XX. In either Team, Single, or Time Attack modes, you must defeat opponents in certain ways to advance. No word yet on what, if anything, is unlockable. There's also a new press release which I've honestly no time to translate. This will happen tomorrow.

News: GP32 update

April 10, 2003 8:44 PM PST

Various / BS

I've been a bit behind on the GP32 front, I know. But regardless - Mill is planned to release on the 18th, (preorder it here from Play-Asia.com) and MegaGP launches for the US on the 15th. Hopefully they will soon change their plan of calling it JoyGP. Lots of new emulator news, with 2600, MAME, NGPC and Dragon ports progressing nicely. No new actual emu releases though.

News: Dreamcast adventure preorders

April 9, 2003 4:31 PM PST

Play-Asia.com / BS

Our pals at Play-Asia.com have updated their Dreamcast pre-order list to include several new visual novel releases, including three limited editions! Titles to be discussed in a bit more detail below (downloads, etc).

Interlude - US$ 59.90 - Adventure (mystery) - Longshot/NEC IC

Symphony - US$ 59.90 - Adventure (galget) - Takuyo

Blue Sky Blue - US$ 59.90 - Adventure - Ecole

Blue Sky Blue (LTD) - US$ 69.90 - Adventure - Ecole

Sweet Seasons - US$ 59.90 - Adventure - Takuyo

Shirotsumekusa - Episode of the Clovers - US$ 59.90 - Adventure (visual Novel) - Littlewitch/NEC IC

Shirotsumekusa - Episode of the Clovers (LTD) - US$ 69.90 - Adventure - Littlewitch/NEC IC

Majyo No Otyakai - US$ 59.90 - Adventure - Frontwing/NEC IC

Majyo No Otyakai (LTD) - US$ 59.90 - Adventure - Frontwing/NEC IC

Now let's talk about these games for a moment. Interlude for one, just looks fantastic, dark and well presented. Here's a movie of the game to get you interested. This is NEC IC's official page for it. Great style and energy to this title.

Symphony is your basic galeget game from Takuyo, based in a school environment. Check out the official page. This is a light hearted game, to be sure.

Blue Sky Blue is something of a mystery to me. This is the official page. A nice looking galget game with big hair and sad girls...the usual stuff. If you're into the art, that's what the LTD edition is for; it comes with a premium disc of CG, etc.

Sweet Seasons is an 18 and over title from Takuyo, with some really fantastic character art. View it at the game's website.

Shirotsumekusa - Episode of the Clovers has an absolutely masterful narrative format. The presentation is superb, ripped straight from the Manga interface. If you want to try before you buy, download the windows demo from the official website. It's a joy just to watch the words scroll by. This is also an 18 and over title, so be aware of that. This video should also give you a taste of what to expect.

Majyo No Otyakai is a great looking game based in a tea shop of little witches. There's a demo movie available here from the official site. Great style, it's almost a shame that it's 18 and over.

My recommendations? Interlude is a must if you're into the visual novel thing. As far as the galget goes, I can really only speak about Majyo No Otyakai, which looks pretty solid. Lastly, if you can stomach the over 18 nature of the game, buy Episode of the Clovers if only for the structure of it.

News: Pinobee to hit US PSX

April 9, 2003 4:31 PM PST

Konami / BS

In other Konami news, Pinobee is scheduled for an April 15th release in North America. Pinobee was Artoon's first foray into 2D platforming which had both psx and GBA incarnations. This release actually has greater significance beyond the fact that a 2D platformer is being released in 2003. If you take a look at the official website, the game is actually being published by Hudson in the US, as it was in Japan. Konami is merely distributing. Is this Hudson's return to publishing in North America, under the umbrella of Konami's stock pull? Could be...

News: All your base?

April 9, 2003 4:18 PM PST

society / BS

This is an odd bit of news. It seems as though seven males were arrested for putting up 'all your base' signs throughout their hometown of Sturgis, MI as an april fools joke. Apparently the residents took the signs quite seriously as a terrorist threat. Said Chief of Police Eugene Alli:

"...we had calls from a number of (people) who didn't really know what to do. Did they need more security? Should they operate their businesses? What did it mean?"

The seven men face charges of disorderly conduct. The full signs read: "ALL YOUR BASE ARE BELONG TO US, YOU HAVE NO CHANCE TO SURVIVE MAKE YOUR TIME." Read the whole story here. To me, any sentencing is too harsh. Thanks to Juan Ramirez for the link.

Site News: One year down!

April 8, 2003 11:59 PM PST

insert credit / BS

It was one year ago today that we put up our first bit of news. insert credit was a plan long before it was a website, but April 8th 2002 was the day we got our act together. To commemorate, why not go take a look back at the first month of insert credit. We've come quite a long way, I think. For one thing, I now post more news in three days than you see in that whole month! We began with an inauspicious 20 readers per day, but now hold the attentions of more than a few folks like yourself. So browse the archives with us, and reminisce! There were many who thought we wouldn't last three months. I'm happy to say that at this point there's no immediate end in sight.

News: Cafe Little Wish

April 8, 2003 11:35 PM PST

New game from Princess Soft; Cafe Little Wish, for Dreamcast and PS2. Both are planned for a May 29th release for 6,800 yen, but there will also be a limited edition for PS2 (7,800 yen) with extra waitresses. Character design by Tinkle. Yep.

In related news, I only just found out that the very excellent Ys-style Abogado Powers ARPG Dvine[luv] was re-released as a Dream Collection title for 2,800 yen. If you can find it somewhere for this price, I guarantee you a fantastic Action RPG/dating sim experience. But it was released in october of last year so...good luck.

News: Gamespot loves Neo Geo

April 8, 2003 11:31 PM PST

Gamespot / BS

A senior editor at Gamespot compiled this video, in which he lauds praise upon the Neo-Geo home console, calling it the best system ever made. Very interesting to see from a Gamespot editor (Greg Kasavin), and definitely something which falls into the 'you damned kids' category.

I wonder...when I become famous, will I be able to make self-indulgents comments and openly pine for days gone by? Hmmm...I suppose I'm doing that now. Keep the past alive!

News: Gungrave, Toro goods

April 8, 2003 11:22 PM PST

Various / BS

Lots of new useless crap to purchase! Red has a very nice Gungrave gun model up for sale, though it's a bit out of my range (24,800 yen). On the flipside, Sony Entertainment Japan has a slew of new goods from their Toro franchise, which people seem to either love or hate. Thanks to Rid for the news.

Download: Mizuiro CDROM Translation

April 7, 2003 11:59 PM PST

rakashazi / VD

Mizuiro, the well-regarded graphic adventure game, now has a nice little translation patch that's compatible with the CD version of the game. Actually a patch of a patch (you'll need to get Alamone's original DVD version translation for this to work), you may download the Mizuiro CD translation patch right here. It's still an early version, so the creator humbly requests all comments and criticisms be sent his way...

News: Aiky update

April 7, 2003 11:55 PM PST

Aiky / BS

Well, if you were concerned about the Compile legacy after they 'became' Aiky, fear no more. Aiky has wasted no time in...promoting their obscure arcade puzzler (Pochi and Nya~) with a poorly constructed plush doll and some udon. Odd! Incidentally, the diary entry you see there is 'narrated' by the cat, thus the 'nanonya~' at the end of each sentence.

News: GP32 latest

April 7, 2003 11:49 PM PST

Various / BS

There's a review of the GP32 Light over at GBAX for one thing. Looks a bit dark to me, but...hard to say from just one set of images.

Also another version of the underwater shooter Submarine has been released. You can pick it up from either GPzigi or GP32 Xtreme.

News: KOF 2000 PS2 (Kr)

April 7, 2003 11:45 PM PST

Megaking / BS

Megaking's website for the Korean release of KOF 2000 (PS2) was recently put up. Nothing much is changed for the port, only one notable element; the logo. If you compare the Japanese logo to the one on the Korean website, you'll notice that while the Japanese version is subtitled 'The King of Fighters' in katakana, the Korean version has ~SNK~ written below. Very curious.

News: Super Star Shooter

April 6, 2003 11:51 PM PST

The Dotmap Brothers / BS

New freeware shooter for GBA, this one is a Super Star Soldier clone. Super Star Shooter is the name, and it's playable via GBA flash linker, or using Windows and Java. Rather fun, but not as fine as rRootage!

Addendum: Seems I can't link directly to sections within their site. Oh well, the game isn't hard to find! And thanks to Triggerzone for the link.

Prior to playing you can change between one of four game modess with the X key. The modes available: normal, psyvariar, ikaruga and gigawing. Really, really fantastic.

News: Dodonpachi 03 long replay

April 5, 2003 11:31 PM PST

Arika / BS

This is very cool...the new video of Dodonpachi 03 was taken during their highscore event on the 23rd of March. The player here gets over 16,000,000 points. Watching this makes me think that just turning the game on will kill me. This is a special original replay, not one of the movies available on the extra DVD which comes with the preorder (and possibly the normal release? Not sure whether or not it's limited). I'm very curious to see those DVD extras. Incidentally, Famistu just reviewed the game, giving it two 8s and two 9s. Very high ratings for a shooter. Can't wait.

After a drunken binge, our old pal Chris Woodard took a thoughtful look at Skies of Arcadia Legends for Gamecube. It's a game with a soul, and a review to match. Definitely worth a read!

You know, Chris likes to say that he's not as 'hardcore' a gamer as the rest of us, but anyone who can play Legend of Dragoon from start to finish is a tougher man than I.

News: Ys 6 first movie!

April 4, 2003 5:01 PM PST

Falcom / BS

Falcom has finally released the first gameplay footage of Ys 6 and Legend of Heroes 6...It's rather astounding. They did an amazing job of translating the 2D world of Ys into 3D, and from the looks of things, they marry the classic gameplay of Ys 1 with the battle style of Ys 3, adding a shade of Ys 5 into the mix. Totally impressive. Here's a direct link for you. I'm not as impressed with Legend of Heroes 6 yet but...who knows, it may play like a dream.

News: Ys iMode

April 4, 2003 4:49 PM PST

Falcom / BS

On the 31st of March, Falcom teamed up with Hudson to release Ys for iMode cellphones in Japan! The game will feature the original graphics and sound, but also an original character and items! The fee is 300 yen/month, a steal at twice the price.

News: Virtual Boy, Dodonpachi 03 on sale!

April 4, 2003 4:41 PM PST

Play-Asia.com / BS

Play-Asia.com has put up their pre-orders for Dodonpachi 03 - go buy that. It will rock.

But perhaps more interestingly! They've also come across some new, boxed US Virtual Boys! They're selling these for $US 39, with Mario Tennis. I'm shocked, but pleasantly so.

News: Shingo returns!

April 4, 2003 4:41 PM PST

Playmore / BS

Those of you who were disappointed with the extras in KOF 2001 (of which I am not one) should take heed. The first extra made known for KOF 2002 DC is...Shingo! Shingo has returned to the fray in the DC version of KOF 2k2, after being absent from the MVS and home cart versions. And if you don't like Shingo, you're no friend of mine!

News: Tales of Symphonia

Two new scans of Tales of Symphonia (GC) images - check them out here and here. Thanks to Time Mage's MMCafe post for the links.

News: To Heart flash

April 4, 2003 4:27 PM PST

???? / VD / BS

A flash not to be missed! This is what happens when you take the intro from the To Heart anime, sung in Korean, and transpose it directly into Japanese. That is to say, take the Korean syllables, and produce the Japanese equivalent. The resultant words and images are utterly nonsensical and completely hilarious. Onigiri Heart? Apple Seabass? Do watch it. (Direct link)

Review: Melty Blood

April 3, 2003 11:30 PM PST

insert credit / VD

As some of you may know, Watanabe Productions has finally moved out of the Doujin-soft world toward greener pastures. Before that, however, they made Melty Blood, a 2d fighting game collaboration with Tsukihime creators Type-moon. Coming from Watanabe, we're almost guaranteed a good game... but why settle for good?

News: Frogger for Game Gear

April 3, 2003 8:08 PM PST

Jess Ragan / BS

Frogger has surfaced for Game Gear! Here's some background info from Jess Ragan, owner of the prototype cart, now available in ROM form.

"Sega had designed a version of Frogger for their Game Gear handheld over a decade ago, but wasn't allowed to release it due to conflicts with Konami (who as we now know owns the rights to this series).
I received a prototype version of the game in a trade several years ago, and had planned to have it dumped for a long time. I sent a letter to Zoop/Bock of SMSpower.org fame..."

And the result is here. Frogger for Game Gear is available for play at long last! Of course, if you want to play it on a handheld, your best bet is our old pal, the GP32.

News: Rockman for Swancrystal

April 3, 2003 7:53 PM PST

Capcom / BS

This news is unfortunately rather dated, but it hasn't really been discussed at length. I've been neglecting to mention for several days now, that Capcom has plans to release a Rockman card game for the Swan Crystal sometime presumably this year. This is actually to be the first Capcom developed game on the WSC, as it nears the end of its life. They've licensed four titles to the WSC, but all were in fact developed by Bandai. This upcoming game is a Capcom game through and through. It's perhaps too little too late, but as long as the system is getting support...

News: Yumeria update

April 3, 2003 7:46 PM PST

Namco / BS

More downloadables for Namco's 3D dating sim Yumeria! At the official site you'll find new wallpapers, and there are three new movies up at Impress Watch as well. Direct links are here, here and here. This is not an H game by any stretch. And yet, take a look at this disturbing image...I'm sensing a new trend within Namco, what with that Xenosaga edited scene. Thanks to Rid Hershel (new site!) for the news.

Well...April 1 is over. If my impromptu joke offended you, please accept my sincere apologies. If you enjoyed it, you may still view it here.

It's really strange - using the MMCafe format changed my writing style. Did anyone else notice this?

News: Winter is...

April 2, 2003 3:26 PM PST

Gamepark / BS

The date for the GP32 love sim Winter Is... has been decided! The game will release on April 4th, for 12,000 krw (9.56 $US) on MegaGP. If this game is anywhere near the quality of Therapy, we're in for a treat. Thanks to GP32 Notebook for the news.

News: Tecmo enraged at nudity

April 2, 2003 3:26 PM PST

Tecmo / BS

The BBC's website reports that Tecmo has become quite angry about the nude hacks applied to Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Vollyball. Seems they don't want their exploitive works exploited? Says Tecmo: "We're watching you very closely!" - big brother is out there! The article makes for an ironic read, so do check it out. Incidentally, all sites displaying info on how to do this are also subject to legal repurcussions. Guess I'd better not do that!

Thanks to Radish's MMCafe post for the link.

April 2, 2003 3:26 PM PST

News: To Come to an End

April 2, 2003 3:21 PM PST

Abogado Powers / BS

Abogado Powers is set to re-release their seminal title from 1999 - shuumatsu no soukagoshi koto - on PC DVD, April 24th for 6800 yen. This re-issue is limited to 5,000 copies, with preorders beginning tomorrow. Each comes with an official art book, which is really quite something, as the design in this game has a very pleasant classic feel to it that you don't much see these days. Well - maybe in Shoujo manga, though I dare say the content would be different! No link to the specific site, as it displays some questionable content. Not hard to find though...

News: MxS update

April 1, 2003 1:09 PM PST

Abogado Powers / BS

Abogado powers has updated with their promised MxS promo movie (direct link). This one has no naughty bits, so it's safe for view anywhere. Very high quality video; Abogado Powers' production values are soaring ever higher with each effort.

News: Matrimelee new movie

April 1, 2003 1:03 PM PST

Noise / BS

Neo-Geo.com has uploaded a new video of Noise Factory's recent brawler. No sound, but still a very fine watch. Seems to be a much better effort than RotD, if looks do not decieve.

Special thanks to Naruto's MMCafe post for the link.

News: DDD03 new movie

April 1, 2003 1:00 PM PST

Arika / BS

Arika has released a new video of Dodonpachi 3 - go take a look.

I'm impressed with how seriously this game takes itself, and how much effort Arika are putting into the music and presentation. It's remeniscent of the times when shooters were something more than an afterthought for the public at large. They were the pinnacle of arcade gaming for a time...if only that glory could be reclaimed.
