News: Orange Pocket

March 28, 2004 11:39 PM PST

Hook / SM

Another day, another H-game. And, like always, it's the migration season for H-games, moving slowly from PC to console and back again. This time it's Orange Pocket (links not work safe), available on the PS2 and DC 4/28. It seems to be the story of a small school at the top of a mountain and the inhabitants of the small mountain town. And the sketchy adventures that happen when you can't get a drivers license until you're twenty and are stuck in the same mountain town for way too much time.

News: MS dev plans

March 28, 2004 11:27 PM PST

Microsoft / SM

Microsoft announced their new game development platform at the San Jose GDC, XNA. Designed for both next generation Xbox and PC game development, programmers can easily develop future projects. "Should we wait for the hardware to decide when we've entered the next generation? Our answer is no. The next generation begins today," said Mr. Allard (VP). In particular, this looks like a strong push by Microsoft to unify the PC/Xbox development platform. Among things, the XNA Tool set facilitates easier Xbox Live interaction between PC games and Xbox games. Much of the Xbox Live backend will become easily accessible to PC programmers via this platform. Japanese Press Release Perhaps more useful is the American XNA site. Lots of the programming interface available to the Xbox will be opened up to PC developers and development will be unified among the multiple platforms.

But this Amusement Soft disc contains an Action game (left), a board game, a SLG, an AVG, and an as-yet genre-unspecific game called 'leaf battle fighters.' Curiously, this game was announced immediately after the firm announcement of Clannad's release date. Clannad is a highly anticipated visual novel from Key. Aside from Eiji and Jhun, everybody was here in 2002...Athena even has her psychoball attack from 2002. It is said that the basic gameplay for this version is similar to 2002 as well. There are also rumors regarding a 'groove select', 45 characters, and the entire roster. Time will tell.

News: Spriggan Powerd

March 8, 2004 11:15 PM PST

???? / BS

Lawrence has mirrored a recent PCB sale - it's Spriggan Powerd, an unreleased arcade shooter. The final price was 121,000 yen, making it one of the most expensive PCB in the world, he says. It's hard to see why...especially since the auctioneer said that he's not 100% sure of the condition (wiring), and is selling it as 'junk' (though the game does come on when booted).

News: Microsoft announces announcement

March 8, 2004 11:06 PM PST

Microsoft / SM

Looks like Microsoft will soon be detailing their software plans for the next generation hardware. Public announcements regarding the hardware itself have not been set yet (but the rumors mills need some time to run their course first, right? Israeli flash memory and Powermac G5++ in a box small enough Japanese consumers?).

Random Stuff: Halo Armor

March 7, 2004 12:13 AM PST

Nightmare Armor / VD

There are cosplayers. And then there are these guys. Now anyone can be Master Chief...for a price. It's too bad that price isn't listed, though...

Edit: While the website's store doesn't list a price for the armor, the March issue of Official Xbox Magazine lists the full armor set at a cool $3500 USD. Thanks to Rich for the heads up.

Brandon's note: Welcome to January, vince! HAH!

The wait is over, Uematsu fans. Nobuo Uematsu's official Square Enix USA site finally sports the link to ticket sales for "Dear Friends - Music from Final Fantasy." A seat can be your's, starting at a $40 USD a head. Even if you're not too keen on FF music, if you're around LA during the week of E3, the LA Phil under Esa-Pekka Salonen are pretty fantastic, and the venue is among the best sounding in the country...

Me? I'll probably be hanging around the nearby Little Tokyo arcades and getting my ass kicked in Initial D...

News: Nintendo retirement

March 4, 2004 11:31 PM PST

Nintendo / SM

Nintendo will be implementing a retirement age. Until now there has been no standard retirement age at the company and the average employee age is fairly young. In fact, the program is in response to employee wishes. One employee comments, "Without an age limit it's difficult to make a break in one's life." The retirement age will be set at 65, giving a little leeway to the average employee who retires at the age of 62.

News: A3

March 4, 2004 11:20 PM PST

BIGLOBE / SM

Beta testing update. The R-18 rated MMORPG A3 (mentioned last week) beta testing application has begun, as noted by this Nikkei article. At the same time, the much cuter Strugarden will soon be looking for participants in a closed beta. Looks like it will distributed by Sammy and developed by FromNetworks. The world of Planteria is based off of middle Age Europe and will be the stage for all the "legitimately cute" character's adventures.

News: Let's

March 4, 2004 11:13 PM PST

BIGLOBE / SM

Something that has needed addressing just got addressed by BIGLOBE. Nothing is more intimidating than trying to pick up all those ecchi games in Japan. You go down to the proper "electronics district" and these big stores plastered with AV models greet you and a million other otaku. You inevitably slink off to a more respectable place (like the 2nd floor at Mandarake, at least pretending you got lost looking for the newest Clamp manga or something.) Fortunately, BIGLOBE will be making available "Let's -A beach cafe~ Love's Battle Beach" for online download for 2000 yen. It blends a management simulation with a love adventure. Check out the official site here, with movies here.

News: noriyo no bouken Online

March 3, 2004 11:50 PM PST

Hyo-Gonosuke / BS

Noriyo no bouken Online is a 3D flash game to beat them all. Incredible detail, classic MMORPG interface, involving themes. It's a bit rough around the edges just now, but you can test play by clicking the orange box on the right side (which says 'test play' on it, incidentally). Thanks to Pie for the link.

News: Guilty Gear Isuka

March 3, 2004 11:50 PM PST

Sammy Studios / BS

Sammy announced today that they will be bringing Guilty Gear Isuka to PS2 in the US and Japan Q4 2004 (presumably Europe as well). The game will still have four player support through a multi-tap. The game is basically Guilty Gear XX#Reloaded with three extra characters, and 2-on-2 play. For the port, they will be adding some new arenas, more survival and co-op option, and a sidescrolling beat 'em up, which just makes my day.

SNK NG USA / BS

According to this EBgames page, Metal Slug 4 is due out for the PS2 in the US. The date given is may third 2004, with a $40 pricetag. It would be odd if this were true, but not totally unwelcome.

News: GBA SP GE

March 1, 2004 11:59 PM PST

Nintendo Spain / BS

Meristation reports on a new version of the GBA SP that will be coming out exclusively in spain. It's just marketing, but worth noting, as GE stands for Girls Edition. The article states that Nintendo of Spain wants to market the GBA SP to girls in the region, based off of studies saying that 94% of girls interviewed like games, but only 33% of girls aged 20-25, and 50% of girls aged 8-12 own a GBA SP. So their solution was to make a pink SP, with a picture of a girl holding a GBA on a plate on the front of the "stylish box". The final blow, there was a recommended list of titles for female players, posted in the press release along with the announcement. Check the Meristation link for the full list, but Disney Princesses, Barbie: Horse Adventures and Disney Lizzie McGuire all make the cut to be sure. Thanks to Sensenic's mmcafe bbs post for the news.
No todas las chicas son personas memas y gilipollas que solo aceptan una consola si la carcasa es rosa y si vienen acompañadas de un juego simplón y maricón... creer que las tias son todas asi es un insulto al genero femenino.

News: Games are evil

March 1, 2004 11:52 PM PST

Many reports decry the influence of games over youth, but few do it with such an Onion-esque title; Video Games Make Kids Fat, Violent, Swedish Experts Say. It's rubbish, but read it for the title if nothing else.
