News: Square Enix new site

March 31, 2003 11:59 PM PST

Square Enix / BS

The Square-Enix merger is finally complete - here's their new website, which while launched on an inoppertune day is certainly indicative of the mockery the game industry is becoming in many ways. Long-winded sentences aside, the new logo and new site are available for your perousal.

Witness Nintendo's own GBA SP registration site. Notice anything wrong? I'll give you a minute.
Got it? Notice the 'What systems do you own?' section. See any...Gamecube options in there? If Nintendo has already forgotten about it, who can blame Dixons? Thanks to Zero of the S:NGP forums for the link.

News: Korokke

March 30, 2003 11:59 PM PST

Play-Asia / BS

New 2D action/fighter from Konami! Korokke has a sort of RPG questing mode, and a One Piece: Grand Battle knockoff-styled battle mode. The game was recently released for PSOne, at a price of 5800 yen. A TV anime is planned for sometime this year. Oh, and the first buyers got these goodies, but...they're long since sold out. Curses! It takes five blocks of memory, so...there must be something big in here.

News: KOF 2002 preorder

March 30, 2003 11:59 PM PST

Play-Asia / BS

Play-Asia has started pre-orders for KOF 2002 (DC), at a price of 59.90 $US. And as a result, prices for KOF 2000 and 2001 have dropped to 39.90 (both for DC). So now is the time to pick them up! If you don't yet have KOF 2001, you're in some trouble.

News: Spirited toe

March 30, 2003 11:59 PM PST

Just Drawing Man / BS

Here's an odd image I found - Just Drawing Man seems to have made his toe into a character from Miyazaki's Oscar-winning film Spirited Away. Bizarre, yet...oddly compelling. Click the pic for a larger image. And incidentally, if you've never seen Just Drawing Man's work, check out his flash movies and games. Very cool, if some may perhaps poor taste.

News: Dancing Sword info

March 29, 2003 11:59 PM PST

I've gotten several queries asking for more info on Dancing Sword for GBA. Thus!

Dancing Sword is a rhythm-themed beat-em up, in which you press the A and B buttons (using rests as well) in certain rhythms in order to create complex combos. These combos correspond to five elemental attack groups; fire, ice, and three kinds of thunder.

Each of the five playable female warriors is fully voiced (you can download samples at the bottom right of the official page). There are five stages, four scenes in each. Character designs are by idou noichi.

Again, the game is available through this link at Play-Asia for roughly $45. With any luck, I'll be able to review this shortly.

News: Azumanga Daioh Advance

March 29, 2003 11:51 PM PST

Starchild / BS

The latest Azumanga Daioh game for GBA is due out on April 25th for 5800 yen (ouch!). If you're not sure whether or not you'd like to spend Gamecube dollars on a GBA title, you can try out the windows executable demo for free! For a card game it's actually very fun - you link up the stars on the cards to form combos, making it a bit more like a puzzler. The problem though, is that it's far too simple for the price. Judge for yourself. Thanks to Holiday's MMCafe post for the news.

News: GP32 update

March 29, 2003 11:45 PM PST

GP32 Emu / BS

Latest GP32 tidbits all come from GP32 Emu this time. For one thing, there's a new version of Arkanoid for GP32 which looks rather nice, and uses the system horizontally. It's called Arcano, and can be found here (direct link). Another interesting item is Guyfawkes' own GP32 windows interface, which seems much more user friendly than Wind-ups. There's a bit more info there, so you may as well just head on over!

Feature: Gaming in familiar places

March 29, 2003 3:34 AM PST

insert credit / brandon sheffield

Last week was a rest period for me. A real one this time. So I tried to recapture the youthful exhuberance I felt when playing some of my favorite titles. This is not about the games, it's about trying to reclaim the feelings I had when I felt as though the industry could do no wrong. Before I knew about mergers, hardware specs and partisan gamers.

Armed with only my Turbo Duo, SNES and Neo Geo CD, I make a mad dash for the past.

Site News: fighter's life

March 28, 2003 6:35 PM PST

insert credit / BS

A few fixes here and there (one in Galerians), but most importantly Eric-Jon's rather cerebral Fighter's Life feature has been re-upped after two months of being 404 from the previous server crash. Unfortunately I only learned of this today. On the bright side, it gives you a chance to read it if you missed it the first time. A worthy engagement.

News: Playmore info

March 28, 2003 6:33 PM PST

various / BS

First off, the KOF '98 and '97 re-issues are out. Move lists have been added for the bosses, for some reason. The consumer schedule has been released, and includes the 6/18 release of KOF 2002 for Dreamcast. Sure we all knew about it, but I like to see official confirmation. SvC Chaos has been added to the English page, but no new info there. However, new info is available at the MMCafe. Earthquake and Hugo will be in the game, which bodes well for those who are hoping for a much more expansive character roster. Images (of the characters in question - NOT in game though) and a bit of system info can be found there.

Itís true. Takara has purchased 30% of stock in Atlus, another brilliant Japanese publisher, and one that I was not aware needed money. This makes Takara the major shareholder in Atlus stock, and able to influence their business decisions. The videogame apocalypse is upon us. Brace yourselves and weather the storm. Check the press releases if you need further confirmation.

Taito has announced the terms of the scoring competition for their 3/20 released 2D shooter 12 Stag (XII Stag). You must submit your scores between the 28th of March (which is now) and the 8th of May. That's a big window! You must be registered in the 12 Stag internet ranking via PS2 broadband, and be among the top ten scorers to recieve the original figure to the left. Click the pic to see more views (navigation at the bottom of the page). Can you live without this little toy? Unfortunately I'm afraid that the answer is no.

News: Ikaruga Normal S++ video

March 27, 2003 3:55 PM PST / BS

Holiday of the MMCafe posted a link to the old Ikarga normal S++ playthrough that insert credit hosted some while back. A fine video, and one you should really see if you missed it the first time round. Rather infamous in that it was the video that took our site down for three weeks, due to being leeched by members of China's STG Club. How appropriate that STG Club would eventually turn into, and that I would now link to the file from them! Funny how these things come full circle.'ll note that I linked to them properly. No bad blood here! End the cycle, I say.

Download: SvC gifs

March 26, 2003 4:09 PM PST

Cain Highwind / BS

Cain Highwind of the MMCafe forums has posted animated gifs from the Japanese version of Snk Vs Capcom: MotM. These are the images you see if you place the cart into a black and white Neo Geo Pocket. In the English version, the dialogue box below just apologizes, saying you must use the cart with an NGPC. But the Japanese version features dialogue. These are now available for your downloading pleasure. Translations...may or may not be in the works.

News: Red Faction for N-Gage

March 26, 2003 4:02 PM PST

News: Cowboy Bebop bug

March 26, 2003 3:32 AM PST

three lost souls / BS

Nicolas Seigneret just emailed me saying that the Cowboy Bebop shooter crashed his registry base when he uninstalled it, so be cautious! I will attempt to bring this up with the maker and see if there might be a patch. This may not happen to everyone of course, but it's good info to keep in mind.

As of now do not uninstall the program. It has been confirmed to kill two people's registries now. Please wait until the maker has responded to my query. If you must have the space, just delete the individual files and leave it dormant in your program tray. Add two more to the body count, I'm afraid.

Interview: Windship of team Princess Brave

March 25, 2003 11:01 PM PST

Windship / brandon sheffield / yenaphe

Another joint interview project, this time the subject is Windship of team Princess Brave. inside we touch on elements of gameplay, a wip screen, as well as his thoughts about the GP32 as a console. I'm not wholly convinced that much progress has been made on the game since it's November discovery, but the interview is worth a read even so. Or perhaps even because of that.

Just so I don't have to direct link to it, check out the thread at the mmcafe for the info. It seems as though some ambitious fellows made some skins (quite literally, eh?) for the models which allow the buxom beauties to be displayed as Illusion Soft might have. Too much time on their hands...

Download: Namco classic games

March 24, 2003 5:01 PM PST

Namco / BS

Namco is making some of their classic games available for download on PC. Not free of course, but pretty cheap - 980 yen each ($8.15 or so). As far as I know, this can be done from the US as well. Videos of the Japanese fighting game competition Super Battle Opera are up at Replay Data Land. Check them out here - a word of advice. If the download doesn't start, just keep trying until you get it. Some of them took me 10 or so tries before the download would begin. My recommendations: Street Fighter 3, KOF 2k2. And if you want to be embarrassed to be alive, download the Capcom vs SNK 2 video. Thanks to an MMCafe post by Shin Srwilson.

News: Cowboy Bebop the game

March 23, 2003 2:35 PM PST

Level.99 / BS

Indeed, the official Cowboy Bebop game of Korea is to be a vertically scrolling shooter from Level.99! You can download the full two level demo (with animation) here. It's on the order of 50 megs, so this is not for the 56k users. The animation is merely the opening to the anime, so for narrowband there's an alternate version which is only 22 megs. Two ship models at this point, for Spike and Faye. The game uses official music as well. If I'm not mistaken, it seems as though the full release will come out for PC and PS2 in Korea. I am hoping though, that this is still early. There's no ship animation, and it feels about twice as slow as it should be. But even so, it's pretty decent're already downloading it, aren't you?

All links down until they figure out this registry problem.

News: MxS - name the oyaji!

March 23, 2003 1:58 PM PST

Abogado Powers / BS

Lots of new stuff from Abogado Powers as promised! First things first; if you need a refresher on the MxS game/system, go take a look at my first post about the game back in January.'s update: name the ojisan!!!

Abopa is taking input from the fans for the names of the men who will be attending the 'shop'. Persons who contribute will not only see their oyaji in the game, but will get their name in the credits and some free goods from Abogado Powers! See my forum post for help getting this to work.

Also updated is the MxS top page. The new stuff - two images are now available in the download section. Next month we'll see a demo movie. The system page has also been updated, but again, it's something I can't link to directly. There's not really much new system info, it just outlines what I said in my first post, but with graphics to assist the reading. There seems to be a lot more humor in this game than I expected.

Should still be possible to catch it.

News: GP32 update

March 22, 2003 11:57 PM PST

Various / BS

Some good news for once! Let's move left to right today. Byulbam has released a windows demo of his GP32 fighter Bloody Cross. Here's a direct link to the download. The controls (two players):

Move: arrow keys, or w,a,s,d
A Button: X, or page down
B Button: Z, or end
R Button: Left Shift, or delete
Reset: Backspace (esc to exit)

Next bit of news, two new homebrews popped up at GP32 Emu. They're from GPzigi, also available on MegaGP. Lamp (a sliding puzzle game), and Shuttle (shooter) are the games.

Last, but certainly not least. A game that was suspended a couple of months ago rises from the ashes!! Due to the resurgence of MegaGP, Topny Soft's racing game TTGO is rescheduled for an April release! Thanks to GP32 Notebook for that last bit.

Review: Gekido Advance

March 21, 2003 3:21 AM PST

insert credit / brandon sheffield

Gekido Advance for GBA is the best looking beat 'em up around, there's no denying it. But there are several fatal flaws which keep this game from topping my list gameplay-wise. Read my review of the European import. We can only hope that they'll clear this stuff up for the North American release.

Update - well sort of. For your interest, check out the publisher's page for the game. If you look at the screenshots, there are enemies there that appear nowhere in the proper release. Interesting!

News: More budget NGP games

March 20, 2003 2:17 PM PST

New discount Neo Geo Pocket stuff from Play-Asia!

Pocket Tennis - $US 6.90 - Sports

Baseball Stars - $US 6.90 - Sports

Neo Geo Pocket Console - $US 16.90 - Silver Platinum

You might wonder why you would need an NGP if you've already got an NGPC. Here's why, for those not in the know - many color-only games have art or minigames that are accessible only by putting the carts into a black&white Neo Geo Pocket. Don't know if it's worth 16.90 to you, but if you've got KOF Battle de Paradise and MotM, it most certainly is.

SNK vs. Capcom has a name and a website! The game is to be called SNK vs. Capcom: SvC Chaos. Playmore has also upped some new character art as well (seen to the left - enlargable pic). Hell of a lot better than the capcom work, I'd say. Ryu's looking a bit chunky though.

Nokia / BS

Indeed, more videos of the Nokia N-Gage in action. This was the movie running on loop at the Game Developer's Conference, and covers not only the N-Gage but all series 60 platform phones. Lots of game imagery in here that's not found in my live playthroughs. This other video is mostly developer interviews and development info on the series 60 platforms, but interesting nonetheless. Taito is represented, so it's worth a look for that alone. Plus plenty of glamour shots of John Romero, just like the one to your left. Both videos in obnoxious Real Media format.

News: Argos to liquidate GC

March 18, 2003 11:59 AM PST / BS

Euro newsies report that the UK retailer Argos has dropped their prices for the Gamecube in a liquidation effort. This move is right on the heels of retail giant Dixons, who pledged to liquidate and drop support for the Gamecube once stock was depleted. Argos has cut the GC to the astounding price of £78.99, which is over £50 cheaper than Nintendo's SRP for the GC - Dixons price is £99. This will of course completely undermine Nintendo's recent push of GC+Metroid Prime for £129, as it's cheaper to simply buy the console and game seperately from Argos. Further, since Nintendo Europe has offered £30 vouchers towards a GC for the first 400,000 GBA SP buyers, this looks like a good time to pick up a GC in the UK! Good time for gamers, bad time for Nintendo.

Feature: GDC wrap

March 17, 2003 4:42 AM PST

insert credit / brandon sheffield

I uploaded these yesterday but neglected to mention them, in a fit of sheer brilliance! The GDC coverage is finally complete (barring the IGF report, which is still forthcoming). Check out the final impressions:

The Programmer's Challenges - a jeopardy style contest at the GDC. Quite silly - complete with video.
The Nokia Party - We got invited to Nokia's private party in the San Jose Art Museum. Video of a fantastic interactive exhibit await.
Post-Show Wrapup - my final impressions. It was a swell ride...

In addition, I updated a few pages. Most importantly, there's a bit more info on homebrew and territory lockouts in the Nokia N-Gage section. And I finally uploaded all images from the first day to the main index (fixed now)! This includes the shot of us getting the last beer which you see to the left. There are other tiny updates here and there, but I'll leave those for you to discover, should you be so inclined. Don't worry - I'm sure we'll do this again next year!

News: New handheld system

March 16, 2003 11:59 PM PST

Ttpcom / BS

Now the Brits have gotten in on the action! The wireless group Ttpcom have a handheld system of their own planned, that being the B'ngo (pronounced Bingo). This news is actually one month old, but I've still yet to see any major reports about it. They boast an embedded still Digital Camera, backlight, it comes with six games, with future titles to be downloadable through the airwaves. Of course it's a phone as well, so this thing will be in direct competition with the N-Gage, should it actually come to market. They're aiming for an under $200 pricetag, and a 2004 release. Click the pic for the full press release. Thanks to our old pal Don Miguel for the link!

News: Motion Gravure

March 16, 2003 11:59 PM PST

Sony / BS

A rather unusual game/DVD from Sony Music Entertainment. Motion Gravure is a 'game' for PS2 and DVD set-top boxes which allows you to view and manipulate 1,000 images of one of four Japanese idols in various stages of undress (though, as it's PS2, there's no nudity per se - that I know of). Check out the official site to see a flash example of the 'motion' achieved through their product. You can also zoom, pan et cetera with the 'camera' that is your screen. Unusual product for unusual times. Thanks to info from Gamefront.

Incidentally, that middle shot down there is the how-to guide, Korean only. Shot to the right is the main menu art, menu free.
Update! Link fixed - my apologies.

March 14, 2003 4:34 PM PST

Lots of new images from Illusion's H-action game DBVR. There's a new character available for download (nurse this time), and they've uploaded scenario 'maps' (more like one-shot impressions) of the DBVR landscape. Here's a pictorial list of the USB joypad types it supports out of box.

Oh, and they've described the mouse driven H-system, complete with sort of 'how-to' screenshots. But that's for you to find on your own.

News: Story of Bug Eyed Monster new info

March 14, 2003 4:16 PM PST

Article Seezak / BS

Some info from GP32 Notebook today. There are ten new screenshots of the GP32 visual novel Story of Bug Eyed Monster uploaded to Article Seezak's site, and they reported on the progress of the game:

Graphics: 50%
Sound: 40%
Minigames: 60%

Unfortunately there are no shots of the minigames, but good info nonetheless. At the moment, the release date is planned for late-April or mid-May, but the way games are trickling out these days, it's really anyone's guess.

Better info will surely come later, but may as well let you know now. The official light solution for GP32 is due to come from Nanotek (distro by Hahotech) on April 5th. The kit will cost 59,000 KRW, or ~47 $US. Pre-orders with Hahotech start today in fact, so...means nothing to westerners once more. But click the pic to see some diagrams/more info.

News: Bobobo PS2 new info/images

March 13, 2003 1:45 AM PST

Hudson / BS

This new info from Impress Watch; Bobobo for PS2 is actually a musical/rhythm game! The full name incidentally, is Bobobo-bo | Bobo-bo Nosehair Festival. Deviating sharply from the GBA word-playing RPG, Bobobo PS2 uses both analogue sticks to independently control the main character's nosehair (voiced by Ichiro Mizuki) in time to the beat of the music. For those who haven't seen it yet, we did upload two videos of the PS2 version down here. The in-game music is catchy as catchy can be. The game is still due out on the 20th of March for 5,800 yen.

Rumor: Unexplained shooter sightings

March 11, 2003 3:21 PM PST

DVDcrave / BS

This was pointed out by Triggerzone - It seems as though two shooter titles are mentioned as being primed for March 20th PS2 release by RAE, whomever they may be. The titles, 1945 and 1949 and Shoot 'em up Vol. 1 are both advertized on DVDcrave and basically nowhere else. Very curious.

Update! I got ahold of Alison Vening from DVD Crave, who was able to answer a few of my questions. She said:

"1945 and 1949 is released by Red Ant. We don't have many details about the game yet, just that it is a shooter and is based on WW2.

Shoot em up is also released by Red Ant and is also a Shooter but we think this one is more along the lines of Point Blank."

Some quick research proved that Red Ant is a rather large distro company in Australia. They've been contacted, and this newspost will be updated accordingly as info comes in.

Update the second - after contacting Red Ant, it seems as though Shoot 'em up vol. 1 is set for the planned date of april 20th, but '1945 and 1949' has been pushed back to the fourth week of june. They don't know what these titles are either, so...there may be another update!

Gunbird 2 for PSX is being released as Mobile Light Force for $9.99, Shikigami as Mobile Light force 2 for $14.99. Both coming out the 10th-11th. Utterly bizarre. And Iím amazed that the licensees would allow their games to be used this way for one thing. And do they plan to manipulate the stories such that they appear to be part of the same series? I hope they at least translate the entire game this time. Thanks to Kikenís post in our forums for the news!

March 5, 2003 11:35 PM PST

Teamblaze's GP Fight is now slated for release on the 21st of March! This will be a simultaneous release on MegaGP and store shelves, so we'll all be able to get this one. The game will retail for 35000 krw (28 dollars or thereabouts), not sure about the MegaGP price, but that doesn't exactly concern us here in the west (and japan, which is technically east). Expect a full review as soon as it's possible to do so. Thanks to GP32 News for the tip-off.

The only conditions are: not too much text, and the game must be in english at the very least. Send a completed game, with English user's manual to: Things are looking up - if they are to support english developers, they must have more concrete plans for support of a western audience for Mega GP, non? Thanks to GP32 News for this info.

News: NEC IC ADV re-releases

March 4, 2003 9:21 PM PST

NEC Interchannel / BS

Not new, but as yet unreported news - NEC Interchannel will be releasing three of their more popular Dreamcast ADV titles on the PS2, April 10th for 4,980 yen each (budget price). The games are Canvas (will feature new character and scenario), Elysion (will feature original character, digital printout and higher res event CG), and Canary. No idea what's new with the Canary title, but I'd say it's safe to assume that a new character and scenario are involved. If that haphazard page doesn't do it for you (it was hidden - had to guess around to find it), here's the official page from Frontwing (DC version).

Hudson has released two new movies of Bobobo (PS2 version). That is to say the opening and a gameplay demo. Not entirely certain whether this demo is of a minigame or what, but it's certainly a departure from the GBA version. Got to admit that demo music is catchy though. They're available here. Or if you're lazy, here are the movies uploaded in a less quicktime-y format: Opening - Demo.

Check out the English press release for some news we posted a while back. Playmore is suing Aruze for not honoring the cease and desist order regarding their use of SNK properties in pachinko machines. They do indeed have a good case here, because even though it was a grey area as to who owned the licenses when the machines were made, after the cease & desist, they became the property of Playmore.
