Download: DBVR demo movie

February 28, 2003 11:58 PM PST

Illusion / BS

The DBVR second demo movie has been released. Another one of those things I can't link to directly. Don't blame me if you find it.

Is it just me, or does the game actually look damned good on its own merits??

Petition: Border Down for DC

February 28, 2003 11:41 PM PST

Dreamcast Petition / BS

Hard for me to believe that there's a dedicated dreamcast-petition domain, but there is. We all know how rarely these things work, but hey - we keep trying right? Sign the petition to bring Border Down to DC from the original Naomi port. The game is made by G.rev, and actually features former Raystorm and G-Darius staff from Taito. A game worthy of play on the DC (official page), so...may as well give it a shot, non?

News: Moonlight Destiny preorder

February 28, 2003 11:32 PM PST

Falcom / BS

The Moonlight Destiny pre-order goodies are available with purchase now at Asobitcity and Softmap in Tokyo - Falcom was having an event at both locations starting I guess...yesterday at 12. Sorry about the late notice, the 28th is yesterday over there. The event may not be over so go take a look - the full list of goods was previously announced, but you can have a look at it right over here. Actually the Moonlight Destiny wrist pillow is a new addition, but the Ys V PC and MD/Ys V OSTs remain the same. Access maps: Asobitcity, Softmap.

News: Sweet Legacy

February 27, 2003 8:31 PM PST

Frontwing / BS

New H game called Sweet Legacy from Frontwing, which I'm mostly mentioning simply because of how wrong it is. Great character design, great music and scenario, but as always with these guys, the chibi thing has got to go. Download the promo movie here, check the gallery here. Release for PC planned on the 28th of March.

Industry Jobs: Playmore

February 27, 2003 8:31 PM PST

Playmore / BS

Two things from Playmore; first off, the KOF 2002 has been added to the DC consumer page, and there you may see several shots (no box art yet though).

More importantly, Playmore is hiring again, and the positions are telling of various things. First they need a graphic designer for animation, games and pachinko slot machines. Animation? Haven't heard that from Playmore before.
Next job up is programmers for game OS. Must have knowledge of Computer Science Engineering, various Linux kernels and device drivers. Intriguing?
They're also looking for a hardware designer, which could indicate that they plan to either abandon plans to use the Atomiswave, or perhaps just want someone who can familiarise themselves with the architecture? The last job is for a pachinco slot machine producer. They're definitely moving into Aruze's territory.

News: Radium GP32 further info

February 26, 2003 7:57 PM PST

Karma Studios / BS

I got a mail today from a fellow by the name of Tom Bryant regarding Radium for GP32. It seems he checked with Karma Studios - here's what they said:

"While we have the GP32 version working, it is uncertain if we will release it for GP32. It seems like the market is too small for us to make any money on it and could possible harm our sales on the other versions. We haven't had much [contact] from our GP32 contacts (including CEO), so we're assuming the system is dead."

Kind regards,

Martin Wenting     (Managing Director - Karma Studios)

Looks like Gamepark is up to their old tricks. Let's see what we can do about it, eh? Take this poll (you can vote without registering), and in a short time I'll take it to Gamepark. Perhaps it will convince them, even if it's only the view of the west.

News: Playmore release list

February 26, 2003 7:45 PM PST

Playmore / BS

Playmore themselves have yet to post it, but the word is all over the net. New release list:

4.24.03 - Metal Slug 3 (PS2)
5.29.03 - Shin Gouketuji Ichizoku (NeoGeo)
May 2003 - King of Fighters 2001 (PS2)
July 2003 - Metal Slug Advance (GBA)
July 2003 - King of Fighter Advance (GBA)
July 2003 - Metal Slug 5 (NeoGeo)
July 2003 - King of Fighters 2002 (DC)
2003 - SNK vs. Capcom Advance (GBA)
2003 - SNK vs. Capcom (NeoGeo)

Particularly surprising is SNK vs. Capcom Advance - and it seems as though Playmore is reclaiming the KOF GBA franchise. No word on developers for any of these titles, nor any official confirmation of this news, but...exciting no? While we're on the rumor tip, SNK NeoGeo USA has unofficial plans to release metal Slug 3 for PS2 in the US. Looks like my Agetec assumption was correct!

News: Capcom All-Stars cancelled?

February 26, 2003 7:38 PM PST

Capcom / BS

Capcom's 3D brawler has been scrapped, according to Gamefront's relay of a Dorimaga report. Perhaps it's for the best - maybe they'll make a 2D rendition instead. Wishful thinking...

News: Radium for GP32

February 25, 2003 3:42 PM PST

Karma Studios / BS

Thanks to an email tipoff from Zamuel, we learned of a new game in the works for GP32. Radium is an over-the-shoulder person shooter, currently planned for GBA (see shot). But at the bottom of the page, they do mention that they've plans to release a GP32 version, among others. Further, Karma Studios' Radium 3D engine is available for use in creation of new GP32 titles. It doesn't look as nice as some GBA emu out there, but it's interesting to see it come to GP32. Take a look at the demo movie while you're at it. The actual gameplay seems rather poorly designed, given the fact that your character necessarily obstructs your view of the enemy while you shoot them. Still cool to see though.

News: Acclaim to release KOF EX 2

February 25, 2003 3:37 PM PST

Acclaim / BS

The bumblers at Acclaim seem to have aquired the rights to release KOF EX 2 for GBA. As luck would have it, there's not a lot that they can screw up with this one.

News: Konami new "logo"

February 25, 2003 3:32 PM PST

Konami / BS

In a press release today, Konami has decided to change their logo for their 30th birthday. So-called 'Konami red' is supposed to symbolize the company's creativity and innovation, and their expansion into becoming a holding company. I'm...not sure how they plan to indicate this through the least interesting, most half-assed logo I've ever seen. It's astounding that someone got paid to make this.

Though I'll admit that their other studios have used logos in a similar typeface before.

News: DBVR preorder

February 25, 2003 3:25 PM PST

News: GP32 update

February 24, 2003 11:49 PM PST

Various / BS

Latest info - let's start with the most important. There will be a demo of Bloody Cross this saturday, March first! It will be limited in terms of character selection, but another version will be unveiled closer to actual product release. It should be RF compatible. That is, if GP32 Notebook hasn't steered me wrong (have they ever?).

A new breakout style game has come from French devr JyCet. It's called BlopBlop, his first project in several months! Nice to see some of the originals let us know they're alive every once in a while.

Also, there's another new C64 emu out. Not sure why, the one we've got is near perfect. But if you want it, you can find it.

News: Aruze suit details

February 24, 2003 11:39 PM PST

Playmore / BS

Playmore released another announcement regarding their suit against Aruze. It seems as though the lawsuit boils down to accusations of piracy in two pachinko machines - 'Iregui' and the oft mentioned 'Crazy Racer R'. Playmore is suing for 6.2 billion yen, or roughly 51.7 million dollars. Someone tell me I'm reading this wrong? Sounds like an awful lot of money, but if the dollar amount sticks (Since they've got an ironclad copyright infringement case), it will be a great boon to Playmore and their efforts. They're really cleaning house these days!

News: Fujiwara's revenge

February 24, 2003 11:34 PM PST

News: Agetec - no SNK

February 24, 2003 11:28 PM PST

Agetec / BS

Gaming-age reported today that Agetec will not be bringing any of SNK's current rash of titles to the US. No clue where they got this info, but it supports the commonly held hope that snk neo-geo usa will be distributing Playmore/SNK properties in the US. Perhaps this weekend a trip down to their office is warranted.

News: X-cross release

February 23, 2003 11:58 PM PST

X-Cross / BS

One-time GP32 developers X-Cross have finally released a new title, albeit for cellphone. The game is Great Fishing, and while it may not look as odd as their previously planned fighter Ssgazy, it's still pretty unsettling to look at. Not sure why. Released through Gamepark's (ex?) telecom partner KTF.

News: Mega GP to release amateur games

February 23, 2003 11:51 PM PST

Gamepark / BS

If I'm reading GP32 Notebook correctly, it seems as though Gamepark is offering the opportunity for serious amateur teams to sell games over Mega GP, perhaps due to the dearth of software recently. A good idea, but one from which we english speaking folks will not be likely to profit. The official story is here, but Korean only.

Josh Hsieh is in Taiwan as we speak, covering the Taipei Game Show all by his lonesome (with supplemental info from yours truly). For those not in the know, the Taipei Game Show is the largest games expo in Asia, with 400 booths, roughly 550,000 visitors, occupying 7,000 square feet of Taiwan's World Trade Center. Take a minute to read his initial impressions of days two and three of the show. There will be more detailed info in the days that follow, so keep checking back! News: Atlus to release Disgaea!

February 21, 2003 10:34 PM PST

Atlus / BS

Atlus has made the excellent decision to localize Disgaea to the US next fall!! The game will be retitled Disgaea: Hour of Darkness. If you've ever read this site, you already know the game, but regardless - it's a strategy RPG from Nippon Ichi, with excellent character design, full voice, and tons of truly engaging gameplay options. Definitely the next step for the SRPG. Check out the features, screenshots and movies here. The original japanese page can be found here. Persons on the MMCafe have been pelting Atlus with emails, asking them to allow the option of Japanese voice with subtitles, as they've done with Skygunner and Rhapsody. Perhaps you should do the same (just don't tell them I sent you)!

News: FaMe Soft's artist

February 21, 2003 10:23 PM PST

Kommissia / BS

The artist for FaMe Soft (Super Plusha) for GP32, has got a comic up for voting at the russian site Kommissia. After scrolling through all four pages of the comic, you can vote on it, 5 being highest, 1 being lowest. Looks interesting - according to Don Miguel, this actually has something to do with FaMe Soft's upcoming RPG!

News: GBA on GP32

February 21, 2003 10:21 PM PST

???? / BS

GP32 News reports that a GBA emulator is underway for GP32 in France. Even though it's just a pre-alpha, it runs at a playable 5-10 fps with no sound. Pretty exciting eh? While you're at GP32 News, check out the email that they recieved regarding Gamepark's PMG efforts. In fact - every english language GP32 site got this email except for us! Conspiracy!

News: Moonlight Destiny OST samples

February 21, 2003 10:20 PM PST

Falcom / BS

Falcom has released several sample tracks from the OST of both Moonlight Destiny and Ys V. Check them out in the download section. If you compare Ys V to the outsourced stuff - it really shows how much Falcom's own sound team has been declining since the early-mid 90s.

News: Playmore update extravoganza

February 20, 2003 7:32 PM PST

Playmore / BS

Several things have come to pass in the world of SNK. For one, a date has been set for the Matrimelee home release - 5.29 2003 for 39,800 yen. And Playmore has upped the official page for it (still on the Noise site). And also some nice art, which you see to the left there.

There's another press release regarding the trio of lawsuits, but basically just confirms what everyone knew would happen. NGP, WWV and Arcade Infinity have to stop selling/distributing pirate carts. Good for Playmore! It also mentions a bit more about the EAGO/EAKIA raids, but we'll just wait for the English pr papers, as it's really not that unexpected, this news.

But once again the release mentioned SNK NE0-GEO USA. And now they have a home. Awwww...makes me misty.

Last thing, some more scans of the KOF Overstruggle at Hard Edge, so go check that out.

Download: Sexy Beach v1.2

February 20, 2003 6:51 PM PST

Illusion Soft / BS

Illusion Soft has finally released the patch for Sexy Beach! As of today Sexy Beach has recieved almost 125,000 downloads, so the release is to commemorate the event. This small patch allows you to play that aforementioned H-scene from DBVR (or one of them, at least), which you may or may not have seen, depending on your ambitions. Those of you who can actually get the game to work, you're lucky people. If you never got the original download, take a look over here. It will only operate in a japanese environment, so XP owners, you know what to do. 2000 owners, do your best. '98 owners - good luck.

News: GP32 to use bluetooth

February 20, 2003 6:37 PM PST

Gamepark / BS

Looks like the GP32 will be using bluetooth technology for wireless gaming and communication soon. Gamepark will be attending the 3GSM World Congress and unveiling their plans (though it doesn't seem as though they're exhibitors there?). GP32 News will be meeting with them and asking a few more questions. They'll be collaborating with IXI Mobile to make the GP32 a Personal Mobile Gateway Links from GP32 Notebook.

Hmmm...working with a California based company. Does that mean something? I...certainly hope so.

News: Doujin company JJsoft

February 19, 2003 5:23 PM PST

J-soft / BS

Been a while since the last Japanese doujin company I introduced. Here's one proficient at english, not less. J-soft is mainly about shareware, but Battle Painter is completely free. A game for four players in which you try to paint the entire field, smack other competitors around, using magic items to assist you. Not of the same calibre as my earlier updates, but - I'll get back to that in a bit!

My personal recommendations from the list - Sakura Taisen 3 and F355 Challenge.

News: Bandai throws in the swan

February 18, 2003 11:21 PM PST

Bandai / BS

You'll never die~~

Bandai has made the final decision to cease hardware manufacture for the SwanCrystal and all of its brethren as of today, with all extant orders having been shipped out to retailers. Bandai has also made no further plans for a next-gen successor to the underappreciated handheld. They will continue software support until further notice, but will shift development more to the GBA side, begining in August. A related bit of news from Lycos - Bandai's stock is up 5.3%, rising 200 yen to hit 3980 yen. They closed this quarter with a 23% rise in profits from the previous term.

It's sad to see it go - the last glimmer of Yokoi Gunpey's brilliance that we will ever see.

News: Sega down again

February 18, 2003 11:13 PM PST

Lycos Japan / SM / BS

An article from Lycos Japan indicates that Sega's stock have plummeted even further in the wake of the Segammy merger. It seems they went down 9.9% to trade at 80 yen, marking three days of continual drops in stock price. Industry analysts interviewed for the article say that the outlook is not good, and that even the restructuring with Sammy might hurt Sega's development teams in the interim. This is Sega's fifth consecutive term of loss. ugh.

News: GBA-SP shortage?

February 17, 2003 11:32 PM PST

Nintendo / BS

It seems as though of Nintendo's planned shipment of GBA-SPs has fallen short by about 90%, due to the strain on Taiwanese chipmakers. NCSX cannot even sell their stock it seems! Well for those desperate among you, Play-Asia still has stock, while most shops are sold out!

I held one the other day - they're quite small, about the size of my wallet when folded. I didn't expect them to be so shiny either. Very well designed, even if it omits the headphone jack.

News: Chess - Emotion Wars development stopped

February 15, 2003 10:31 PM PST

Teamblaze / BS

More bad news: Chess - The Emotion Wars development has been postponed. This is most likely due to the fact that Teamblaze's finished game GPfight has not been released in the two months since it's completion. Rumors still abound that GPfight will be released for MegaGP only, thereby excluding the western audience. I sincerely hope that the game is released and well recieved, if so, we may see the resumed development of Chess - TEW!!! Thanks to GP32 Notebook for the link.

Everyone knows this by now - Reuters reported that Sega and Sammy are to become one entity, with all properties shared between. The Sammy president will head the new organization, but Sega will own a small majority of the stock. Perhaps this teaches Sega that there are better ways to beat EA than 'at their own game'. Interestingly Reuters makes it sound like Sammy isn't even a gaming company at all! We all know that to be false. I only wonder - what's to become of Smilebit, UGA et al? Will the merger carry to the west as well??

Guess this is what happens when you miss your sales mark by 90%. This sort of news becomes more and more common these days. We live in changing times.

News: Huge collection of old computers!

February 12, 2003 3:55 PM PST

Kubota Junya / BS

WOW. What a collection! A man by the name of Kubota Junya has been collecting archaic computers for some time now - take a look at his collection. Truly astounding. And his old game system collection is nothing to sneeze at either (CTRL+F "video game" on the same page). An Otaku of the highest order. How long does it take to amass this sort of collection? Well, he's turning 55 next month! Feel free to join the thread in our forum and list your own collections! My modest list is the one at the top. Thanks to the mmcafe post from Porcellino for the link.

Incidentally, this fully disproves anyone who thinks Bandai is new to the gaming industry. They've made as many game consoles as Sega!

News: Atlus delays Lufia for GBA

February 12, 2003 3:13 PM PST

Atlus / BS

According to a recent email press release, Atlus will be postponing the ship date for Lufia: The Ruins of Lore for GBA. The game will now ship in late April, due to the discovery of a non-fatal yet annoying bug. Glad they didn't just go ahead anyway - lack of quality control yields unfortunate results. In the mean time, check out a new movie of the game in action.

News: More Bloody Cross pics

February 11, 2003 3:45 PM PST

Byulbram / BS

Three more pics from Bloody Cross - animated gifs this time. The Jinsu one is old (actually made slightly bigger and slowed down), followed by 'Razor' Kent to the right, and a judo character whose name I cannot decipher. She's a bit manly looking though...

Off-topic: Regarding Stevie Case

February 11, 2003 3:10 PM PST

legioss / BS

Another emailed tip-off. Yesterday, in viewing the Nokia ads I was wondering who this Stevie Case character was, and why she was allowed to say such inane, backward comments in an official promo video. Turns out she's sleeping with John Romero. Well there you go. Thanks to Legioss for the info.

News: New Power Instinct location test shots!

February 11, 2003 1:00 AM PST

Thanks to an email from the mysterious Alex, I can now share four shots of the New Power Instinct location test! So what can we garner from these? You start with fifteen characters, that SS!-looking referee is there, backgrounds aren't too drab, though seem pretty domestic. lots of ROTD resemblance here! These were originally posted by Ice on the Hardedge Forum in Germany. Where he got them, I do not know. Enjoy! They're Huge!

Download: Dodonpachi 3 second vid

February 10, 2003 11:58 PM PST

Cave / BS

Another video of the upcoming PS2 shooter from Cave. The intro is rather silly - basically Arika has found one of the greatest shooting fans, and test his skill with this game - "Watch. Play. Then maybe you should...DIE!" So it says, and it's no like. This fellow just can't make it through without two deaths. Even so, an impressive replay! I love the Darius-esque music too.

Download: N-Gage videos

February 10, 2003 9:17 PM PST

N-Gage / BS

Four new movies of the N-Gage in action! Check them out:

Video 1 - Shows many N-Gage games in action, slow framerates and all. Graphics running the gamut from Atari 5200 to PSX level. Very, very confusing video as a result.

Video 2 - Shows Nokia's N-Gage and 6800 and 3650 gaming phones. Specs et al.

Video 3 - Interview with developers Monkeystone. I love this one actually. The girl interviewed says something completely false, only to be immediately countered by John Romero's subsequent words. Are they even aware of the contradiction?

Video 4 - Again, who the hell is this Stevie Case character? Play games on your phone in your car? Way to inform the generation guys. (also shows the Nokia 9290).

News: Own your favorite star's DNA

February 10, 2003 7:59 PM PST

Megaking / E-JRW

Based on Brandon's megaking link earlier, I started poking around at what else Mega Enterprises has for sale. Check this out:

"Star DNA Product - Our internet shopping mall introduces and offers a variety of products with your favorite star's DNA. The DNA merchandise keeps fans intimate to their favorite stars."

"Information about stars" - We provide fast and accurate information about stars including star's current location, schedule, news, and etc. You can apply for audition whenever you like, as well as you can hear other applicants music through vocal bulletin board. Also you can join and create a fan club and community."

I am... terrified.

Site News: Bumpers Arcade, Angel Eyes

February 10, 2003 7:27 PM PST

Insert Credit / BS

A couple of things - first and foremost, Agnes, an associate of E-JRW checked out the Bumpers Arcade, mentioned in my Adventures in SF Wonderland article. Here's what she had to say:
"I was walking to the computer lab today and took the route down Pine St and when I hit Kearny I saw it! The Bumpers Arcade, just as advertised! But it was HELLA closed down, so I couldn't buy any crack."

- There you have it folks. The end of an era.

The other bit of site business - I updated the Angel Eyes review to reflect a proper translation of the prefix kanji, a long with a few notes about its usage. Oh - and I fixed the completely ridiculous errors too.

News: Megaking releases huge amount of SNK PC titles.

February 9, 2003 11:49 PM PST

Megaking / BS

This is old yet continuing news. I'd not heard anything about this prior to my own recent discovery - MEgaking (developers of the infamous Metal Slug 4) seem to be legally releasing the grand majority of SNK's older titles (read Neo-CD games) for the PC. I say legally only because there's no Playmore injunction against them yet. In addition, there's no mention of where to buy these games, but my interest has been piqued. Check out their PC titles here.

Great news for GP32 owners! The developer of the mighty Her Knights has finally released pics and info regarding his upcoming VS fighter; Bloody Cross! The pics can be downloaded as a .zip, and sale is planned for summer of this year! A motion gif can be seen here, and concept art here. There's a detailed description of gameplay, etc...but sadly it's entirely in Korean on Byulbram's messageboard. If you can translate it, send it my way!! Thanks to GP32 Notebook for the news!

News: Illusion bits

February 8, 2003 11:46 PM PST

Illusion Soft / BS

Two news items from Illusion tonight. First and foremost, they have released some pics and CG of an H scene from DBVR, which is scheduled to drop very soon. Due to its graphic nature, I certainly won't be linking to it directly. If you can't find it, you just don't want it badly enough!

Next bit - In the members only section, Illusion have revealed that the first 1000 persons to purchase DBVR will recieve a mini-soundtrack with the game as a numbered set. See the pics below. Several of the tracks will be provided for download (in the aforementioned members section) on the 21st and 28th of this month. Should there be sufficient interest, I will post these as they surface.

News: Oldergames speaks to Half-Life leak

February 6, 2003 5:32 PM PST

Oldergames / BS

I contacted R.W. Bivins of Oldergames for his take on the release of the Half-Life ISO for Dreamcast. You can see his intentions for the official release version here.

So what's the word on the ole Half-Life release that everyone's talking about??

Apparently someone got their hands on an earlier beta version and decided to hack, crack and release it on the net. I've seen it and it's a tad buggy and runs at about %50 of the quality of my version.

Unfortunately this makes any potential official release of the final version of Half-Life moot, and I am not too far away from cancelling HH on the dreamcast alltogether. These last few days have shown me that many within the DC community don't see ISO swapping as a bad thing.

This week has been a good one for DC fans but I'd seriously suggest that anyone considering downloading this rip take a step back and think to themselves how they'd feel something they worked on were released without their permission.

It seems as though HH is tentatively cancelled for Dreamcast, according to Oldergames' release list. For anyone who wishes to discover the truth regarding which is the true official release (the leaked ISO or the Oldergames Gold Master Disc) one need only wait a week until we put up footage of R.W.'s game playing on the Dreamcast. The difference is rather clear.

News: N-Gage info

February 6, 2003 4:55 PM PST

N-Gage / BS

I Love Money~!

Sega, Taito, Eidos THQ and others have signed on to make games for Nokia's new handheld. Sega and Taito have both put out press releases regarding their upcoming games for the console (in Japan at least).

Sonic N
Puyo Puyo
Super Monkey Ball
Virtua Tennis
Sega Rally

Puzzle Bobble VS.
Taito Memories
Super Space Invaders
Camel Try

Regarding the games in the Taito Memories chip...Cadash is an excellent action RPG, Camel Try is a ball+maze game, Puzznic a field-clearing puzzler. These seem all to be coming to the US. Of Sega's games however, only Sonic-N and Super Monkey Ball are mentioned as US releases thus far.

The technical specs of the N-Gage have been revealed, so go check those out. Technically it's the most underpowered, and has the smallest screen of the available portabes. But the back light, built in rechargable battery and wireless networking are rather nice.

Lastly, An article at Nikkei News indicates that many of the networking features will not be available Japan.

Boys Love Scramble will be ported to PS2 from the original PC release sometime in 2003, retailing for 6800 yen. If you wish to download the intro, it can be found here. And whatever you do, don't click here.

News: NEC returns to the US

February 5, 2003 4:05 PM PST

It seems this news has been everywhere for some time now, but took a long time to get to me. NEC is forming a division of NEC Interchannel in the US! Chou lucky! (thanks Comic-Kaze) Whether this will be beneficial for we who desire localized games - remains to be seen. The first title they'll be publishing is Tube Slider for GC, from Nintendo's own subsidiary NdCube. NdCube most recently made F-Zero: Maximum Velocity for GBA. How strange for NEC to be publishing a game from a Nindendo second party...

Regardless, I'm glad they're back, and I hope they bring some nice stuff to the table with them. The ex-VP of Capcom (Clint Kurahashi) will be heading the group.

News: GBA to play anime

February 4, 2003 3:55 PM PST

AM3 / SM / BS

AM3 - the designers of the GBA and GBA-SP have something "new" up their sleeves. They've created a device (aptly named the AM3 Adapter), which will allow media to be viewable on your GBA or GBA-SP via Smart Media Cards. Anime, educational media, original animation and digital comics were mentioned as salable items within these cards. The SMCs will not be writable by the users for 'security reasons', and thus the cards must be purchased individually. The adapter will cost $2,800 yen, blank media cards 2,000 yen (media content must be downloaded from Nintendo for about $5). The AM3 Adapter will be on display at E3. News taken from the Dengeki article.

Another note: this strikes me as more than just a Nintendo vs Gamepark issue here. Toshiba is a main stockholder for Nintendo, and it will be their proprietary SMC which are used. Gamepark supports any SMC, but uses Samsung SMC for their games. Is Toshiba using this to attempt a takeover of the SMC world market from the Koreans? I would not be even slightly shocked.

update! Scott was checking a few other sites. It seems that Gamespot Japan has further info; look to Bandai, Nintendo, Sega among others to provide new materials for the SMC. Also look for Pokemon anime news, video announcements and promotion videos. Download stations should be in a multitude of locations (like internet cafes, electronics shops etc), and perhaps this is what Nintendo means when they say that they're bringing the medium to the world. Using the ARM7 processor within the GBA, files can be compressed to the point where 24 mins of movie are possible on a 32 MB SMC (on the GP32 1 meg=1 minute), and 5 hours of music (that seems nearly impossible, considering they're using MP3). The test sale period will begin in may (after E3) in Japan, and formal distribution is planned for October. The US release will also be in the second half of 2003, the Euro release in erly 2004.

To view my personal opinions on the matter, take a look here.

News: Warrior Blade, Puzzle Bobble

February 4, 2003 3:43 PM PST

Taito / BS

Warrior Blade

It seems as though all characters from the upcoming Taito brawler (that's an odd combo, as I type it) Warrior Blade have been disclosed. Check the section to view all ten of them. I could be wrong though, this could just be the Taito side of the joint project with Titus. Hmmm, I wonder what the chances are that the character on the left will be edited for whatever type of domestic release we may see. Pretty good, I'd say.

Taito has also unveiled a new system element from their Puzzle Bobble 4-player Gamecube extravoganza. Take a look at the bottom of the rules page. Basically as you pop bubbles, if the resultant junk bubbles are of colors which could complete a link elsewhere on the board, said bubbles will automatically fly there, until each chain is complete. Interesting, perhaps difficult to plan, and only available in battle mode. It's nice to see new ideas in the series though.

edit: I'm completely wrong, as this element was used in a past Puzzle Bobble for PSX. Thanks Rid!

News: Toon, Maiden Breeder

February 4, 2003 3:29 PM PST

Teatime / BS

Japanese galget makers Teatime have announced that Toon, their latest title will be released on the 14th of February. To comemmorate the announcement, they released a free downloadable minigame, which...we missed out on. The free download window is over. My apologies! But one can still download the opening, or check out the system (hint: click the pics in the system section to see the characters' actions). This game is made with a type of cellshading developed by teatime, which they're calling 'Toon Rendering'. This basically allows for 3D CG to look about 85% indistinguishable from proper 2D cell art. It really does a nice job, I think.

While you're at the Teatime site, might as well download the OP for Maiden Breeder while you're at it - if only because of that name.

Last note - if you've never played a galget or love ADV title, here's something for you. Teatime has a collection of Flash Minigames available for free play. These allow you to have limited conversations and interactions with characters from two of their games. No sound, but still kind of fun.

News: Xbox losses double

February 3, 2003 5:29 PM PST

Microsoft / SM / BS

A piece on Slashdot showed an article at IT World. Seems the X-box lost $348 million for Microsoft in 2002, up from the $180 million loss in 2001. With the unveiling of the X-box Lite at E3 this year, who's to say how much more will be spent? Slashdot also makes mention of a rumor that Microsoft is keeping a Japanese company afloat at this time, which could explain the recent flood of Sega titles to the X-box, no matter how unprofitable they may be.
